Ok, 60 episodes ago, back when were were young and innocent, we started this podcast with coverage on the copyrightability of APIs. There were twist…there were turns! And a ton of nail-biting moments, but, finally it seems that the Supreme Court made a ruling (that APIs are not copyrightable)

In this episode we cover the timeline, the ruling, and the possible effects it means for all of us developers, starting on the original days of Sun, and then going all the way to April 5th. We are not lawyers but pundits, and as such, we engage in punditry as we dissect what the Supreme Court ruling said (is it narrow? overarching? did they get the analogy right?)

Would this turn out to be a George-Lucas moment where there will be more litigation? Episode VII, VIII or IX? or a Jar-Jar Binks moment? We don’t know, but we sure be covering them if they happen in our watch!

Getting everyone on a stage and geeking out with an audience makes for an amazing episode. We had a special guest Jeanne Boyarsky and discussed Hibernate + Graal, Google involvement in Open Source, and Oracle claiming everyone wants copywrited APIs (spoiler alert, we don’t). We also played a fun game of “What’s that Acronym”.

We then dive into a big discussion on Continuing Education for us Java Developers, including Java Certificates, Bootcamps, and other ways for us to either get into or update our info in the field. Ah, we got together with our usual suspects, and while our local Curmudgeon was enjoying his Old-fashioned, I was enjoying Cold Medicine. Even so, we went through the biggest events that happened this year, including the Oracle v Google debacle, The new copy-and-kill strategies from cloud providers, the proliferation of Java implementations, the re-emergence of Eclipse Foundation as a home for standards, and of course, the Java EE (reincarnated as Jakarta EE) saga.

Oh goodness! There is so much news going on now! Google and Oracle are on round 4 of their lawsuit, and while these giants battle it in Court, it seems that Oracle is stopping investing in Java Development! What does this mean for Java? Is it the end of rapid release lifecycles? Is EE losing too much steam? And just like in the movies, when everything seems dire, a new hero (sort-of) forms. The Java EE Guardians splash the scene! for Truth…Justice…and The Ameri…oh wait, no, that’s Superman. The Guardians are all about convincing Oracle that leaving EE is a bad idea. Would they succeed? Let’s hear what the opinion in the room is about these group of spirited developed banded with a purpose.
